We Indians call ourselves Indians. What might have been a slur in the past has been our word for generations now. Linguistically speaking, words change meaning all the time. It's only a certain subset of Indians, highly influenced by white liberals and leftists, who resist calling themselves Indian. I would argue that the overall resistance to "Indian" is a function of elitism.
