Can’t wait to roll up our sleeves!

I wrote a manuscript (novel) but was told by editor I was not a “known” writer. How do you get known if no editor wads it? Catch 22. I self-published it. But then how do you sell it? It is on Amazon but only a friend bought it. It was futile and I gave up. Wanna read it? (I am half joking).

Ouch. Every writer with a long career can relate to the discouragement of editorial rejection, and the puzzle of finding an audience. I see you are a journalist from your biography, so you know a little bit about what it’s like to be in the trenches. You also had enough confidence in your manuscript to prepare it for publication.

The one editor who turned you away, gave you a disingenuous reason for his pass. I’ve been an editor for 40 years and the only editors who are respected are the ones who break new talent out. If we didn’t have new talent to promote, the whole publishing industry would grind to a halt.

As you can see, I’m teaching a series of master classes this autumn on the subject of getting new work published, old work discovered, and publishing well. —Sort of a crash course in publishing wisdom.

Take a look at the full link and see if a few of them speak to you. You might be interested in the ones about manuscript readiness, composing pitches, understanding the publisher brain, and selectively testing your work in public.

Or not! Sometimes an artist just needs to vent, or get a little encouragement to see things from a new point of view.
