Neither of my parents were the superstitious type, they were very practical, and I am like them. I only realized as I grew up that many others have premonitions, superstitions, “a vibe,” etc. I just didn’t grow up with it, so it’s just an artifact to me.
Excellent article: quite the inventory; Norte Dame Academy on Overland Avenue in WLA - growing up in the 60s, the nuns who ran the institution were very unsettling to my 4-8 year old self; if I ever saw them on the way to my library - always walking in pairs - I perceived them as a bad omen; something wicked this way comes
Oh what a great quote. You know, someone gave me a wimple once, for a costume party, in jest. When I put it on, with my hair under the nun’s hood, in black, holy shit, it was like a therapeutical experience. I couldn’t believe the things that came out of my mouth.
I remember our dear Sally Fields! It was a totally romanticized view of the nuns, had nothing in common with the parochial school nuns I knew. But it was like we regarded it in another universe, the TV version.
Scariest nun ever was Rosalind Russell in Trouble with Angels starring Hayley Mills as rebellious Catholic girl - judgmental, severe and swift with punishment
Sinner! Say fifty Hail Marys! Actually, rosaries are great insomnia cures. About ten prayers in ,the our fathers and the Hail Marys all slush together in a formless blob like Demi at the end of that rogue cosmetics movie. Oh shit, a spoiler. Why would anybody be anything but a Catholic? The glitz, the drama! Going to Europe shortly to try to figure out why I hate God and love cathedrals.

I’d love to hear about your memory of “confession,” early or recent.

Remember the Flying Nun - didn’t like that either; loved how you resolved the inventory questions;

Oh yes, I remember watching that with my mom, and she said Russell NAILED it.
I really hope someone turns this confession thing into a TikTok filter. It’s begging to be answered in video.
What a great idea! I am so behind on TikTok, but I love it when people send me the best bits.
