I’ve been enjoying the heck out of the “film critic life” again.

I started working as a stringer for the SF Chronicle and the Book and Film Globe a couple months ago, and I love it.

Do you know “reviewing movies” is how I first quit my day job at Good Vibrations?

© Rink, 1989. My show at the Castro Theater (double feature with Sister George!) was my favorite night of my life as a film critic! And YES, Save the Castro before those developers turn it into an Arby’s.

In 1986, editor Jack Heidenry at Penthouse Forum hired me to be their film critic. He paid me $1200 a month, and it was a fortune. I bought new shoes and paid the rent on time.

When Jack called me out of the blue, on a rotary phone, I said, “ Uh, do you know I’m a radical lesbian feminist? Are you drunk?” At the time, I was the editor of On Our Backs.

Jack assured me it was for real and he thought I was “the Pauline Kael of Porn.” Nifty! He hired Annie Sprinkle and Veronica Vera as columnists at the same time— truly a holy t…
