Grapefruit is New Umami, Part 2
This cocktail rivals the Irish Coffee as a breakfast of champions
Last spring, I announced that “grapefruit is the umami of cocktails,” and many of you chuckled.
“Susie’s hyperbole is part of her charm,” you said.
Well, ladies, you can just SIT DOWN and start polishing your glassware, because this latest concoction I’ve found takes the grapefruit+booze mystery up to a previously unimaginable plateau.
The beverage is named “Coffee with Gianni,” a bartender homage to barista champion Gianni Cassatini. I don’t know any of the personalities, but what an honor to be appreciated in this beverage.
My discovery began innocently, when a guest at my summer picnic left behind a bottle of Absolut Grapefruit in the grass.
I didn’t know what to do with the stuff, but I hoped it wasn’t a gimmick. I went to the company recipe site, (Absolut doesn’t seem to acknowledge women drink vodka— odd, but I have a story from the 80s about that)1— and you know what? It’s a revelation.
