Capri is definitely one of the “gayest” spots in southern Europe — it’s been a playground for queer artists, writers, and aristocrats since the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The island drew people like Oscar Wilde, Norman Douglas, and later Jackie O’s entourage. Its Blue Grotto mystique, whitewashed villas, and glamorous jet-set vibe made it a queer sanctuary long before “gay tourism” was a phrase.
What a wonderful set of photos!! (I’m a sucker for old ones). And great snippets to go with them. Your Aunt Molly sounds like an interesting character, as of course does your Mom. ❤️
Well Done I don’t always read to the end on substack but this was worth it . Thanks
This the highest compliment, I know what you mean!
Wow!!! Susie, I love all of this.
It makes me curious about everyone else’s “mommy”. Doing a photo album is fun.
I love this walk down memory lane. Like your dad, my favorite photo of your mom is the one in Capri!
I’ve never been! I’m so appalled I’m less well traveled than my parents, by a long shot.
I wonder if a person could find that exact spot? 🤔
We need to hear from the Capri-lovers. ;-)
I found this online:

Now you make me want to see photos of you and your Mum! You’ll have to sneak me some, sometime.
