I dove into my poetry archives last night. I stumbled onto some of my father’s Latin translation poems, from when he was a young man.

William (Bill) Bright was 21 years old in 1949 when he composed the first poem—and 31 years old in 1959, the year after I was born, when he translated the second.

Yes, he was a Latin nerd, and as you know, those people just have too much fun. They speak to all the essentials of life.

My father Bill Bright at Ford Ord in his civvies, early 50s, still enrolled at Cal to finish his PhD, Berkeley’s first Linguistics degree.
