On this day, July 19, 1885:

140 years ago, three Hawaiian princes— David Kawananakoa, Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole, and Edward Keliiahonui— came to Santa Cruz, California, and built surf boards out of local redwood.

They paddled out off the mainland for the first time.

They surfed off the San Lorenzo River rivermouth.

It was the beginning of something special.

"O'lo" is the name for this special surf board. "Hui nalu" means wave sliding, or surfing.
